Introduction: Lawrence Kohlberg (1927–1987) is the pioneer of the theory of stages of moral development and participated actively in the development of the fields of moral psychology and moral education. Kohlberg was especially inspired by Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist who created the theory of cognitive development. Mark Baldwin, John Dewey, and George Herbert Mead also influenced his thinking (Barger, 2000; Encyclopedia of Education, 2002). In this paper, I will analyze in-depth Kohlberg’s theory and discuss an article that uses Kohlberg’s theory to foster moral courage for nurses. I-Kohlberg s definition of moral development and moral maturity According to Kohlberg, moral development is a consecutive and invariant evolution of the moral reasoning of human beings from the childhood to adulthood. Thus, Kohlberg defined three levels (pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional) comprising each two stages of moral development, hence, a total of six stages: (1) Obedience and punishment, (2) individualism, instrumentalism, and exchange, (3) â€Å"good boy/girl†, (4) law and order, (5) social contract, (6) principled conscience (Barger, 2000). He believed that moral maturity is reached step-by-step, step. That is, one cannot skip a stage through this process or move back (Villanova University, n.d.). In contrast, Piaget in his cognitive development theory, established four stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. The issue of prioritizing between a house and a baby which should come first has been a subject of different of debate for many years. This has not only happened in Singapore but also in other many Western nations. However, in West acquiring a flat before a baby is not a government policy but an individual choice. The difference between Singapore and other nations is that in Singapore the flats are subsidized by the government and one condition to be able to access the same is to motivate people to give birth to more children. The Singaporean government is using this approach to counteract the declining population in the country where the population is dominated by the senior citizens(Chen, 2016). This government strategy seems to attract a lot of criticisms of the Singaporean people who are the major stakeholders(Yap, 2008). Josephine Teo's remarks seem to lack the support of many Singaporeans. Despite the issue of having a baby first before a house being a government policy, Teo should have won a human face and discuss the issue from the majority affected Singaporeans point of view. This paper neither supports nor disputes Teo's remarks as every situation is completely different, as well as everyone, is different. However, the paper opines that the issue under discussion should not be a government policy, but rather it should be a personal decision as it is in many of the Western countries. This is an individual decision, and the Singaporeans should be left to make it by themselves(Thang, 2005). This is because there are various issues to put into consideration before deciding it is either a baby or a house which should come first. In the following paragraph, this paper discusses the critical questions that one should ask before making a decision. The first question should be whether the relationship between the couples is solid. This is because those who in a relationship or married can decide to have a baby first. However, things may change and end up filing for a divorce. The question raises who will qualify for the flat, father or mother? The second questions highlight the issue of the age. Some people may opt to wait a bit longer before having a baby. It should either because of the studies or other personal reasons(Chan, 2007). This paper offers a suggestion that these people should be allowed to acquire a flat first before having a baby. However, the challenges come in whether they will be able to have a baby in future. To address, the government should undertake all the Singaporeans who wish to acquire a house before a baby through fertility test. The last question goes to the Singaporean government and seeks to ask how someone will be able to offer a comfortable accommodation to his or her family without a house. Even though the family is founded on love but not housing, a proper housing will be an influencer of the happy family. The Singaporean government policy brings it clear that it has not understood the social problems facing the people of Singapore. This paper recommends that the adoption of the Grand theory will help the government understand the social processes and the social difficulties facing people regarding concepts and ideas instead of a specific case evidence. The adoption of this theory will help the government understand social exchange among the people, societal interaction as well as how society functions and how to solve conflicts within the society. The appreciation of the Grand theory by the Singaporean government will facilitate to a greater change in its approach to encouraging people to have babies through unimpressive approach. The decision whether to have a baby before having a flat should be strictly a personal and individual affair but not a government indirect coercive approach. How Religious Groups View the Notion of Sex Before Marriage Various religious groups have different perceptions about the notion of sex before marriage(Baker, 2010). For example, each group has established more codes that govern the issues of ethics, morality, and sexuality. Bearing this is sensitive topic it may be difficult for the various religious group to discuss it freely. Therefore, a researcher will be required to devise appropriate methods that will ensure that the intended information for the study is obtained. Methods of collecting differ and vary under different disputes. However, the researcher will go for the approach which suits his or her context best. This paper chooses questionnaire as the best approach to obtaining perceptions on the notion of sex before marriage from different religious groups. The questionnaire should be designed in a manner that it resembles the common religious teachings. This will enable the targeted group to offer their notions freely. However, just like any other data collection technique, this techn ique will have the following strengths and weaknesses(Finn Jacobson, 2008). Strengths It will be easy and cheap to gather data from large numbers of people. People will feel more comfortable when expressing their perceptions through questionnaire rather than interviews. There is a time and place to dress however you like and that is outside of school. Kids can dress however they please outside of a standardized institution. Also it would be very unprofessional if parents had to meet a teacher or principle for a conference or something school related. And the teacher or principle was wearing unprofessional clothing looking unclean and not clean cut, In other words not looking professional for their job. Students and parents alike don’t like to see this it’s very hard to take them serious and consider them professional. With kids unable to noticeably tell or distinguish which kids belong to what gangs in school if any at all. With a blending, it helps kids see who the actual person is rather then who or where they came from or what their culture is or background. For example all you have to do is step in to any public school with a normal dress code during lunch and you can just see all the different groups that are happening in a school from rich kids and jocks to the nerds and the poor kids. Myanmar is a country located in Central Asia that has experienced massive refugee migration in the last two decades. The displacement of Myanmar nationals, specifically the Rohingya Muslim group, is mainly due to three factors. Firstly, these residents have fled to other countries and even continents in order to avoid further conflict within the state (UNHCR 213). The nature of conflict is based on human rights abuses, while others are centered on religious differences.It should be understood that Myanmar has been mainly run by the military for at least 30 years and any rebellious acts against these forces immediately result in massive killings and other forms of persecution (UNHCR 59). Unfortunately, refugees from Myanmar often reach Thailand in a very deplorable state, as they have traveled by foot or by sea for several days or weeks to simply cross the border.To date, there are approximately 200,000 Myanmar refugees who currently reside in camps around Thailand, with most of them having settled there almost 20 years ago. Other Myanmar refugees have moved to Bangladesh for temporary shelter, as there were particular groups in this country that has close linguistic ties with Myanmar. By the 1990’s, approximately 270,000 refugees have been docu mented to move out of the northern state of Rakhine in Myanmar and were directed to two Bangladeshi refugee camps, namely Nayapara and Kutupalong.The current government of Myanmar has earlier expressed their refusal to include the Rohingya group as their citizens and would only recognize this as an ethnic group. Fifteen years later, most of the Rohingya refugees have returned to Myanmar, yet a small portion of this population made up of around 26,000 refugees have continued to refuse to return to their home country. He was even prideful thinking that he was better than the other boys he was forced into the elevator with â€Å"I felt superior to them in my way, and I didn’t like the manner in which we were all crowded together into the servants’ elevator† (pg. 287). The author writes about them being packed into this elevator designated for â€Å"servants. I pictured animals set for slaughter, which was not far from what the battle was, packed into a cart terrified and bewildered. Perhaps the young man believed that times had changed from when his grandfather was alive. Like the average teenager he may have believed that no one can understand the culture and the time quite like they can. He may have thought that his grandfather’s perspective was that of a bitter old man and that white people really did care about him and the rest of his people. The grandfather’s deathbed words affect the protagonist character throughout the story like the haunting of a ghost. His words tell the young man to act how the white people would like and say what they would have him say. At first I thought he was telling his grandson to stay the same and accept oppression as a way of life. In actuality I think he was telling him that he would get further acting correctly then he would by lashing out or acting irrationally. I think the grandpa knew that in order to gain respect you must act like they expected instead of becoming a radical for change. I think that essentially he was trying to tell his family to â€Å"kill them with kindness. Many symbols were present in this story. The naked blonde woman who was forced to dance in front of the men is the first. I believe that, much like the men, the blonde was a victim. The author even says that when they picked her up and tossed her around she had â€Å"terror and disgust in her eyes. † (pg. 288) To the black men she symbolized something that they were not allowed to have. I thought that although she was w hite she was still a victim to the powerful men of the town. She was forced into the ring the same way that the black men were. It seemed as if the author wanted to illustrate the complete disregard these white â€Å"powerful† men had for any one else. The American flag tattoo on the woman’s belly was ironic. I think that the flag, to many people, symbolizes freedom and rights. People around the world associate the American flag with freedoms unlike those in any other country. I think that on the stomach of the blonde woman it was a slap in the face. The black men saw the flag on her body and knew that they could not have her, nor could they have the freedoms that they were entitled to as citizens of this country. The flag shook and waved with the movements of her body, taunting the men. Waving at them, as if beckoning them to come to her, yet they were unable to because of their skin color. Much like the liberties of the United States that waved themselves in the face of the black people but they could not have because of their skin color. The author mentioned red, white and blue multiple times in the story. I thought that the references to the colors symbolic to this country were interesting. I think he used them much the same as he used the flag on the woman’s stomach. They were symbols exclusive to the United States, which is supposed to be a place of freedom; however the black people were only allowed to take part half way. The author spoke of the men’s red faces from their drinking, and the lipstick of the young woman was also red. The men were white along with the dancers skin which was a stark contrast to the young men she was surrounded by. I think that it is ironic that white is often associated with good, or innocence while black is symbolic of darkness or wickedness. In this story the roles were reversed. The white people were wicked and the black people were victims. Smoke in large quantities creates a blue haze like what might have been present in the ballroom. I think that it is interesting the use of blue because it can be associated with suffocation. I think that is what the white men were doing to the black men. They were suffocating them with their presence and their oppression. The coins that they were forced to scramble for off of the electric mat were terribly sad. They were for cars, which surely none of the men could afford. I thought it was sad they were scrambling for little amounts of money or none at all. Finally the last thing I think that was symbolic was the scholarship. While it was a great gift from the community, I think that it was also another stab at black people and their place in society. By giving the young man a scholarship to the state’s leading black college the town was saying that he was allowed the opportunity to further his education but had to remain in his place amongst the other black people. I thought that the fight the men were fighting was not just against the white people. Sadly the white people turned the black people on one another. The white’s did everything they could to tear the black people down including letting them tear each other apart. I think that the older perspective allows for us to see how he had developed as a man. He has education and a broader perspective on the world. The 17 year olds perspective was very narrow because he had not yet seen the crimes white people were capable of. The older man was not surprised or phased by the way that white people behaved with regards to blacks. I also think that as he grew older he found a part of himself that lacked.

Auntie looks down on Shabanu for being ?boy like?. ?A young lady shouldn?t go with her headdress uncovered. You?re too old to act like a boy? (33). Mama is obedient as well. Sadly, more than 50 years later, the church remains overwhelmingly racially divided. Only between 5% to 7.5% of churches in the U.S. are considered to be racially diverse, a designation meaning that at least 20% of a churchs members dont belong to the predominant racial group there: Ninety percent of African-American Christians worship in all-black churches. Ninety percent of white American Christians worship in all-white churches, noted Chris Rice, coauthor of More Than Equals: Racial Healing for the Sake of the Gospel. †¦Years since the incredible victories of the civil rights movement, we continue to live in the trajectory of racial fragmentation. The biggest problem is that we dont see that as a problem. The racial reconciliation movement of the 1990s, which sought to heal racial divides in the church, inspired religious institutions in America to make diversity a priority. The popularity of so-called megachurches, houses of worship with membership in the thousands, have also contributed to diversifying U.S. churches. Understand the History of Segregation in the Church Churches today arent segregated simply because racial groups prefer to worship with their own kind, but because of  Jim Crows  legacy. When racial segregation was government sanctioned in the early 20th century, white Christians and Christians of color followed suit by worshipping separately as well. In fact, the reason the African Methodist Episcopal denomination came about was that black Christians were excluded from worshipping in white religious institutions. When the U.S. Supreme Court decided in  Brown v. Board of Education  that schools must desegregate, however, churches began to reevaluate segregated worship. According to a June 20, 1955, article in  Time, the Presbyterian Church was divided over the segregation issue, while Methodists and Catholics sometimes or frequently welcomed integration in church. Southern Baptists, on the other hand, assumed a pro-segregation stance. As for Episcopalians,  Time  reported in 1955, The Protestant Episcopal Church has a relatively liberal attitude toward integration. The North Georgia Convention recently declared that segregation on the basis of race alone is inconsistent with the principles of the Christian religion. When trying to create a multiracial church, its important to acknowledge the past, as some Christians of color may not be enthusiastic about joining churches that once excluded them from membership. My opinion on this was sought for its impact on objectivity and bias. I preferred using the market value and my response was acknowledged for its correctness. I was informed of a new standard which would only allow FIFO to be used as inventory and I was asked about its usefulness in terms of verifiability. I agreed with the new standard which was then explained by the CFO, Mr. Washington, as being more verifiable due to elimination of double calculation if both FIFO and LIFO were used. Majority of my suggestions in the exchange of emails in the activity were right. I had a tendency of going for the majority in the first problem but on reflection the dissenter’s decision seemed more appropriate as using the current discount rate would affect the financial position of the corporation in a positive way. My instinctive response was of using the current market value or a fair price of the securities on offer in the market was correct. Using FIFO for inventory as a sole criterion in the new standard was also an appropriate decision. Exposure to accounting theory does influence reasoning power as one can make a more appropriate choice as and when required during a corporation’s financial planning and implementation. Knowledge of the minimum standards set up by the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and FASB (Financial Accounting Standards Board) helps in making pertinent decisions which can influence the success or failure of a corporation.
